Thank you Tokyo!

9 Aug 2021 by Matt Gleeson

I am sure that at some stage over the past fortnight, all our athletes and parents witnessed a moment of shining brilliance from the biggest show of all, the Olympic Games in Tokyo. As so many Australian Olympians made mention, they hoped this would brighten spirits of Australians in lockdown and struggling with the challenges of the Covid Pandemic. I thought I would take the liberty to share some of the highlights of the games that I walked away with, such that they may bring a smile to you, and help our club focus on those items that make sport so special for those involved:
……CAMARADERIE – The headline photo of this post typifies the ultimate in mateship and support of one another. Cedric Dubler can certainly be proud of his performance as a decathlete, but his performance as a teammate is second to none. At NDLAC, every supportive cheer helps people find that extra lift and fills their heart with joy that others want them to believe and achieve.
……. ENJOYMENT – The power of positive thinking and belief was so evident in Nicola McDermott’s amazing High Jump performance. Nicola works exceptional hard to produce her best, but it is her ability to find the strength to produce her best through positive thinking that stands out the most. At NDLAC, some days you’ll best a Personal Best, some days you’ll feel flat and wonder why – but if we are enjoying the sport of athletics, the rewards will always come if we remain positive. Remember it takes half as many muscles to smile than it does to frown (and you get a nice little boost of dopamine out of every smile).
……. INSPIRATION – Peter Bol’s amazing 4th in the 800m was scintillating to watch, but his post race interview was even more special. There was no doubt he was hurting physically and mentally after that race, having come so close in one of the toughest races of the games. But his class was revealed with his statement: “I’m grateful to Australia, I’m thankful to everyone in Australia. We’re human at the end of the day. We inspired the whole nation. That’s the goal.”. At NDLAC, we love to be inspired – but the efforts of our athletes, by the grace of our helpers, by the enjoyment of being sporting together. Inspiration is hiding everywhere.
……. SUPPORT IN ADVERSITY: I still get a lump in my throat when I think of Gen Gregson and her fall in the 3000m Steeplechase. Having trained so hard for so long, reaching the pinnacle of her sport, her accomplishment is to be admired. Our hearts broke with her injury, and how alone she must have felt – Husband in Europe, Family in Australia, and her lying injured and exhausted on the track …ON HER BIRTHDAY. But within minutes, the social channels lit up with message of support and love for Gen from Australians who cheered from her and from athletes who respected her. At NDLAC, we want Litte Athletics to be a treasured memory of childhood growth. There will be times of pain for everyone, but we want to support every member of our club, and make sure they know we are there for them.

I hope the Olympics delivered some fantastic memories for you, and I can’t wait to see you at Foxglove in Spring.

Yours in athletics,
Matt Gleeson
President NDLAC
